Hello, my name is Patti Byrd and I am a kindergarten teacher here at Sacred Heart Catholic School. I began teaching here seventeen years ago and the wonderful staff, parents and students have made me feel right at home. A Rogue Valley native, I attended Sacred Heart from 2 nd through 8th grade and graduated from St. Mary’s. I live in Talent with my husband, Rick. We have three grown sons, two daughters-in-law and 3 grandchildren. When I’m not teaching or taking classes, I enjoy camping, hiking, canoeing and biking. I also enjoy sewing, quilting and reading, when it gets too cold and wet to play outside. For me, working with kindergarten students is the best job in the world—we have fun making new friends and learning about this wonderful world God has given us.
At SHCS our School-Wide Learning Expectations—for each child to grow as a Christian role model, responsible citizen, and life-long learner—are an integral part of our kindergarten curriculum.
We offer each child a classroom experience based upon Catholic Christian teachings in an environment that stimulates spiritual, emotional, academic and social growth. Our faith in God and the morals and values taught by Christ are an intrinsic part of our school and are consistently visible in our classrooms. It is who we are.
Our religion lessons include:
Learning prayers, songs, and Bible verses and stories;
Participation in Mass and community prayers (i.e. morning prayers and Living Rosary):
Acting out Bible stories;
Faith in action—application of our Christian beliefs in our interaction with others around us (i.e. obeying our parents, respecting others).
Research shows that young children learn best in small groups using hands-on materials. We provide many diverse types of learning opportunities such as:
Learning centers with activities that focus on math, science, writing, phonics, reading, listening, art, drama, blocks, games, puzzles, etc.;
Field trips and guest speakers;
Specialist classes for music, library, PE, Spanish and art;
Free choice/exploration time with puppets, dress-up, building materials, art and writing materials, outdoor play, etc.
Literacy development in our classrooms is a co-mingling of reading and writing. This process begins at home and continues throughout your child’s school career. We provide many reading and writing experiences throughout the day with:
An environment rich with books and other reading and writing materials;
Read aloud time, partner reading and shared reading;
Phonemic awareness activities;
Introduction of various genres: Mother Goose rhymes, poetry, non-fiction articles, folk and fairy tales, fiction stories, etc.;
Writing opportunities including dictating stories, illustrating, writing stories and ideas, and sharing written work in the author’s chair.
Reading and writing activities integrated within our study units.
Kindergarten students arrive with a wide range of social, behavioral and academic abilities. Each child is unique and special. For this reason, kindergarten success is measured in the progress each individual child makes during the year as he/she moves towards both standard and personal goals. We monitor and adjust our curriculum throughout the year to accommodate individual and group needs. In order to keep parents apprised of each student’s progress we send home a report card each trimester and mid-trimester reports. Parent-teacher conferences are held in the spring and fall, but parents are encouraged to schedule a meeting with us anytime you have questions or concerns. Weekly classroom newsletters and bi-weekly school newsletters will also be sent home to keep you up to date on what’s happening at school.
We recognize parents are the primary educators of their children. Kindergarten is such an important and wonderful time in a child’s life! It is a blessing for us to be part of your child’s special kindergarten year. Working together we can accomplish so much. With the Lord’s blessing, may this year be full of the best and brightest possibilities for your child!
