Hello Sacred Heart Family! My name is Matt Gerschefske and I feel truly blessed to be the 3rd grade teacher at Sacred Heart Catholic School. I moved to Ashland almost five years ago from Springfield, Missouri. My heart has always desired to live in the West and closer to the mountains and I missed the great Northwest. I spent a successful decade in the business world before I decided to go back to school to utilize more of my strengths and embark on a career that is personally more meaningful and rewarding. I have always naturally connected with young people and I enjoy being a positive influence and a person who models character in hopes of truly making a difference in their lives. In 2014-15 I was a teaching assistant and basketball coach in Spain, and that was an experience that gave me a more worldly perspective, stories to tell, and a culturally diverse experience that brings depth and relevance into my classroom. From Fall of 2015 to Spring 2017 I was our middle school Social Studies teacher, which was an outstanding experience and one I would never change.
As a teacher, I genuinely enjoy building community and making my classroom a safe place for students to express their ideas openly. I strive to make my classroom a place where learning is fun, a place where students want to come to be a part of something greater, which is a community they value. The little things in life are important to me, as are my relationships, with people and with God.
Our third grade classroom this year has been full of laughs, learning, prayers, and togetherness. My little “Happy Campers” are so talented and we have had such a wonderfully fun start to the year. My room has a very outdoor and nature feel to it. From poetry in the playground and learning all kinds of new skills in Language Arts, to improving and learning our multiplication in Math, to reading about all kinds of different communities in Social Studies, to Ozobots in STEM lab, our year together has been tremendous so far. I have truly enjoyed the priceless one liners and random stories my third graders have shared with me this year, not to mention the hundreds of football passes we have thrown to each other during recess. This is a special group that I will always remember.
