Hello to Families of Fourth Graders,

My apologies for not being able to greet you last Thursday evening at our Open House.  I went home from school that morning feeling very ill and just could not get well it until partway through this weekend.  I do hope that you toured the room, saw the publication process that the students have worked so hard on, as well as the Friendship folders and Geometry work.

I was so impressed with all of the hard work that was put into their science projects using the inquiry method.  They did such a good job on their hypothesis, their experiments, listing their variables and writing their reports!  Great jobs and thanks to all of you parents who assisted and insisted until the job got done!

Oregon History and Geography:

We began our unit of study learning about Lewis and Clark and some of the early explorers who came to the "Oregon Territory" by sea.  We will continue next learning of the fur trappers, the Indian groups that occupied our area, and then concentrate on all that was involved in the migration along the Oregon Trail.

Steps to Respect:

As I have mentioned earlier, the class is now beginning our mandated Steps to Respect unit of study.  The friendship folders that you saw on the student's desks are the first steps as we learn about empathy, compassion, positive ways to communicate and self respect within our school and community.

Field Trip:

Permission forms will be coming home the first part of this week concerning our field trip to the expo grounds in Central Point.  The FFA members from Eagle Point High School, funded by the state's Agricultural Department, offer a day of hands on learning.  There are many stations to visit, including sheep sheering, horse shoeing, goat milking and many others.  Lunch is provided free of charge.  However, please note that the lunch includes meat.  I always take a sandwich along as I am not a meat eater.  Check you child's permission form for time and date.  I will need a few parents to come along with us if you are able to do so.  If you are able to do so, just let me know by writing on the permission form.

Book Report:

The children are finishing reading their class assigned books.  I am giving them directions for a book report that is done within the class.  With their work on their science projects, I did not want to assign another home project.

The blessings of God from my heart to yours!

Fondly,

Susan Champion

I am currently teaching the fourth grade and am also the school counselor. I first began teaching at Sacred Heart School in 1982.  I taught 2nd and 3rd grades for eight years and then began teaching the fourth grade.  I have taught the fourth grade for more years than I have taught at any other level.  I have also taught the fifth grade. When our middle school was added, I was asked to teach middle school social studies the first year and then language arts the second year.  Afterward, I asked to teach the fourth grade again and that is where I am placed now and I truly love the grade level. In addition, I have served as the school counselor since 1992.  I am available to students, parents and the staff for questions, brief counseling, in-services and I lead the Rainbows for All God's Children program which has been in existence at our school for the past        twenty-five years.
